Local Camps Bring Rain Barrels to Downtown Hendersonville

Summer camp season is in full swing in the mountains and downtown Hendersonville loves its campers.

Western North Carolina plays host to thousands of campers each summer and this year downtown and a number of those camps have discovered a way to share some of the great things happening in each

Blue Star Camps, Camp Judaea, Camp Highlander, Camp Rockmont, and Camp Hollymont are committed to creating safe summer spaces where children learn to discover their best selves, build community, and do good. We define “doing good” both as simply being kind to others AND being kind to our planet. This CampStock rain barrel project, in partnership with Conservation Generation, provides one avenue through which to raise awareness around water conservation in an effort to help heal our planet.

The camp’s kids have participated in a bit of friendly competition while bringing their own artistic embellishment to and learning about water conservation via the rain barrels. Conservation Generation, which launched the initial idea and helped bring together multiple camps by partnering with them as a forum for environmental stewardship and education, has been engaged in seeking ways to mainstream conservation by making it easy, fun and rewarding!

Mayor Volk was contacted by Conservation Generation about partnering to bring awareness to this effort. Recognizing their contributions to our community and given that we are always looking for ways to welcome our campers and their families to Hendersonville, displaying the Barrels in downtown seemed like a natural fit.

The barrels will be on display in the 400 block of Main Street from July 22nd through August 3rd. Each barrel has information about that individual project that was generated by the kids who participated. We hope you’ll visit downtown and make a point of checking out the barrels and their story while you’re here!
