¡TriskaTrivia! Themed Trivia Night! @ Triskelion Brewing Company
Mar 20 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

¡Triskatrivia!
2019’s Themes: (updated as they are determined)

Feb 20 – Game of Thrones
Feb 27 – World Geography
March 6 – 80’s Music & Pop Culture
March 13 – Food & Drink

¡TriskaTrivia! is Triskelion’s Themed Trivia Night!
Starts at 7pm, and usually lasts at least an hour and a half.

Glorious Prizes:

First Place Team: $25 Gift Card
Second Place Team: $15 Gift Card

Each member of the team that wins the Very Hard Questions Round (almost always Round 3), will win a free beer.

If at least 6 people dress up in costumes that relate to the night’s theme, then the best dressed (determined by me) wins a free beer!

(that means if your entire team of 6 are the only ones dressed up, then a member of your team is destined to get a free beer)

There are six rounds, with 10 questions each, and each round will be on a different subject that relates to the night’s theme… Each question is worth 5 points.

Teams can consist of up to six players, or you can play by yourself if you have no friends.

Cheating is not allowed… no phones, no “yelling out of answers” (even wrong ones), and no handy reference materials… This is not an open book trivia night.

Come on out and show off your Brainz!!!

(or lack thereof)

Steve Miller Band @ Peace Center
Mar 20 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Steve Miller was a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late ’60s. With albums like Children of the Future, Sailor, and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music and society could be in the years to come.

In the ’70s, Miller crafted a brand of rock ‘n’ roll music that was polished, exciting, and irresistible. Hit followed hit in an endless flow: “The Joker,” “Livin’ in the USA,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” “Jungle Love,” and “Abracadabra” among them. To this day, these songs are instantly recognizable when they come on the radio-and are impossible not to sing along with.

Appalachian Evenings: Liberia, South Carolina @ Mars Hill University
Mar 21 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

The talk presents the story of a community of African Americans in northern Pickens County, South Carolina. Descendants of freed slaves obtaining land in 1865, the community persists largely through the efforts of Mable Owens Clarke, the family matriarch. The story chronicles five generations of the Owens family and their neighbors, describing their struggles through slavery, Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, and the desegregation of the state. By using ethnographic interviews and secondary sources, the story allows members of a largely ignored community to present their own history for the first time. The story sheds new light on the African American experience in Appalachia, the resilience of a black community in the face of white oppression, and a new way to understand the symbolic relationship between residents and the land they occupy, a sentiment common in the Appalachians.

John M. Coggeshall (Ph.D. Anthropology, SIU-Carbondale, 1984) is Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice at Clemson University. His research Interests include American regional and folk groups, mountain cultures and sense of place, and rural African-American communities. His publications include Liberia, South Carolina: an African American Appalachian Community (University of North Carolina Press, 2018); Carolina Piedmont Country (University Press of Mississippi, 1996); and Vernacular architecture in Southern Illinois: the ethnic heritage (with J. Nast, SIU Press, 1988). He is currently working on a manuscript titled “Mountains of Menace and Majesty.”

Appalachian Evenings are free of charge and all are welcome. The event will be held in the Ramsey Center, which is located inside Renfro Library on the campus of Mars Hill University.
