Hendersonville Community Theatre (HCT) is pleased to announce its 2019 season and staff. The eight-show season will include a blend of comedies, dramas, and musicals including a few lesser-known productions and ones rarely staged locally.

“Last year was a great year for HCT,” said Colby Coren, Artistic Director. “Our audience sizes broke records and our shows continued to raise the bar for local community theatre. In 2019, our hope is that audiences will see a new level of quality and professionalism both on and off the stage.”
“HCT 2019 season is ‘the year of the woman’ with 6 shows in our season that each feature a strong female character,” Coren continued. “We look forward to transporting our audiences from the heat of a Louisiana Summer to Sweet Apple, Ohio, to the home of America’s spookiest family and beyond!”” The season will include four shows each on the theatre’s Main Stage and four shows on the theatre’s more intimate “salon style” Second Stage.
The 2019 season include 6 regular season shows and 2 special events:
Steel Magnolias (March 8-17) a special event on the HCT Main Stage
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this beloved movie, Truvy, Annelle, Shelby, M’Lynn, Ouiser and Clairee return to HCT for six special performances. These six Southern women come together in this hilarious and heartwarming story of life, love and loss in a small Louisiana town. Celebrating family, strength in women, and big southern hair, this stage production is the perfect way to experience 30 years of Steel Magnolias. Oleanna (May 3-12) on the HCT Second Stage
He said, she said—but exactly what happened? David Mamet’s Oleanna examines the power struggle between a university professor and one of his female students, who accuses him of sexual exploitation and, by doing so, spoils his chances of being awarded tenure.
August Osage County (May 31 – June 9) on the HCT Main Stage
This award-winning dark comedy centers on a tense family reunion in a small Oklahoma town. When the family patriarch vanishes, the Weston’s daughters return home to care for their afflicted, manipulative mother Violet. Armed with prescription drugs and paranoid mood swings, Violet reigns over the home as family secrets unfold.
U Rang Durang? Two Short Comedies from One Wrong Mind (July 5-14) on the HCT Second Stage
Two of Christopher Durang’s most popular one act plays: “For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls” and ”‘dentity Crisis,” combined together into one night of bizarre hilarity. These crackpot comedies both turn family upside down in a way that only Durang can.
Bye Bye Birdie (August 2-18) on the HCT Main Stage
The classic musical about 1950’s small town America, teenagers, and rock and roll remains as fresh and vibrant as ever. Teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie has been drafted, so he chooses All-American girl Kim MacAfee for a very public farewell kiss. Inspired by the phenomenon of Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (September 13-22) on the HCT Second Stage
This award-winning classic examines the complexities of marriage and betrayal. Late one evening after a faculty party Martha and George draw an unwitting younger couple, Nick and Honey into their bitter and frustrated relationship. As the alcohol flows the young couple are drawn into George and Martha’s toxic games until the evening reaches its climax in a moment of devastating truth-telling.
The Addams Family: A New Musical (October 18 – November 3) on the HCT Main Stage
Celebrate Halloween with America’s favorite quirky family of ghouls. The Addams kids are growing up and Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. When the Addams host a dinner for Wednesday’s boyfriend and his parents, secrets are disclosed, relationships are tested, and the Addams family must face up to one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change.
Escanaba in da Moonlight (November 15-24) a special event on the HCT Second Stage
A family in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan has a storied tradition of deer hunting. Everyone in the family has bagged their fair share of bucks except Reuben Soady who is on the verge of becoming the black sheep of the Soady family. However, this year is going to be different. The Soady men have retreated to their cabin deep in the woods and things start changing, some for the better, others for the worse. A hilarious show full of humor, horror and heart.
