Join us for our Annual BioBlitz! This year we will be blitzing the Nantahala National Forest in the area surrounding the Nantahala Outdoor Center. During the Nantahala Gorge BioBlitz, volunteers will be paired with expert naturalists to conduct a detailed inventory of the diverse natural communities in the area. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the amazing flora and fauna in our local forests. Experts on plants, mushroooms, insects, spiders, birds, and mammals will be on hand to guide participants on a rich exploration of the natural world. Data from the BioBlitz will help MountainTrue and the Forest Service continue protecting the unique environments of the Nantahala Gorge. Thanks to the Nantahala Outdoor Center and the Nantahala River Lodge for helping us put this event on!

Before the BioBlitz begins, we will meet at the Big Wesser restaurant and break up into multiple small groups. Different groups will be blitzing areas with different levels of accessibility, so there should be a group that fits everyone’s comfort level. The BioBlitz will wrap up around 5pm, but we invite you to stay afterwards for a post-blitz beverage. Drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and food will be available for purchase at the NOC. There are bathrooms on site.

What to bring:

Lunch & snacks
Water (~2 liters recommended)
Close-toed shoes
Sunscreen and raingear
Folks are welcome to bring personal notebooks, hand lenses, field guides, bionoculars, or any other tools, but these are not required.
