Apple Festival Composting

A pilot food waste composting project will be introduced during the 68th annual Apple Festival in Hendersonville, North Carolina, August 29th through September 1st.

During the 2013 Apple Festival, 3.81 tons of recycling were diverted from entering the landfill. The goal is to exceed the 2013 recycling figure by incorporating food waste into this year’s program.

Henderson County Environmental Programs & Solid Waste Division through Danny’s Dumpster of Asheville, North Carolina will manage the pilot project. Danny’s Dumpster will provide twelve bins (be sure to look for the green lids in the food vending area of the festival) for compost collection. Danny’s Dumpster is the only permitted compost processing facility in western North Carolina.

“The Apple Festival is pleased to work with Henderson County to bring composting to this year’s Apple Festival. We have been recycling for a number of years and that has greatly reduced our waste flow. The addition of composting adds to that effort. We appreciate food vendors and apple growers helping us eliminate the use of Styrofoam this year,” says David Nicholson, Executive Director of the North Carolina Apple Festival.
