Brevard College Symphonic Winds Perform World Premiere at April 17 Concert

The Brevard College Symphonic Winds will present a newly commissioned work based on ideas collected from Brevard Elementary School students during its spring concert on Thursday April 17 in the College’s Porter Center for Performing Arts.

The 7:30 p.m. program, which is free and open to the public, will feature the world premiere of Through the Looking Glass Falls as well as works by Del Tredici, Jolley and Hindemith,

In 2013, Dr. Jennifer Jolley, Assistant Professor of Music at Ohio Wesleyan University, received a commission, jointly funded by combined grants from the Brevard College’s Friends of Fine Arts, Brevard Community Band, and the Transylvania County Schools Educational Foundation to create a new work using ideas supplied by Brevard Elementary School students. Dr. Jolley visited Brevard Elementary School last winter and worked closely with students there using a process helped her translate their ideas into music. The resulting piece, Through the Looking Glass Falls, consists of 16 separate, short movements each of which represents the ideas of a different student. All of the students and Dr. Jolley will be present at the premiere.

The performance will also feature Brevard College student Olivia Wiley, who will conduct selections from Tielman Susato’s Danserye and Brevard College Concerto Competition runner-up, soprano Katie Smathers, who will perform Musetta’s Waltz (“Quando me’n vo”) from Act IIof Giacomo Puccini’s opera.
