New Textile Recycling Pilot Program at Henderson County’s Convenience Center

Henderson County Solid Waste is piloting a new textile recycling program at the Convenience Center. Residents may now drop off dry clothing, household textiles and shoes at the Convenience Center in the GreenZone bin during normal business hours.

Clothes and shoes may go in the same bin but need to be bagged separately. All items need to be bagged.

Items NOT accepted are scrap fabric, wet items and items that have been used with a solvent-type liquid.

“Henderson County has a robust network of thrift stores that we still want residents to support first but we also wanted to provide an option for items that can’t be reused or sold,” says Environmental Programs Coordinator, Christine Wittmeier. “Textiles represent 7.7% of all Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfilled annually which is about 11,300 tons!”

The average U.S. citizen throws away 81 pounds of clothing and textiles a year, according to the Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART).

For a full list of accepted textile items, please visit the “Textile Recycling” page on hcrecycles.org or contact Environmental Programs Coordinator, Christine Wittmeier at [email protected] or call (828) 694-6524.
