Mountain Area Workforce Region Sees 9.2% Unemployment for July 2020

The Mountain Area Workforce Development Board recently reported the unemployment numbers for July 2020 in our region. The Mountain Area region (comprised of Buncombe, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania Counties) unemployment rate remains high at 9.2%.

Transylvania County now is tied for the #3 lowest rate of any county in NC at 6.6%. Buncombe County’s unemployment rate increased to 10.1%. Henderson County’s unemployment rate increased to 7.9%. Madison County’s unemployment rate increased to 8.0%. Henderson, Madison and Transylvania Counties are below the state average of 8.9%.

Our region’s streak of maintaining the lowest unemployment rate in NC ended in April 2020. Now our region has the #4 highest unemployment rate in NC. For 61 consecutive months the Mountain Area Workforce region, as well as the Asheville metro had maintained the lowest unemployment rate of any NC region.

There are 19,886 unemployed individuals in our region for July 2020, that compares with 18,798 unemployed individuals in our region for June 2020. There were 33,035 unemployed individuals in our region for May 2020 and 32,255 unemployed individuals in our region in April 2020.
