City of Hendersonville Announces Job Opening

As part of the Water and Sewer Department, a Line Maintenance Mechanic I performs routine manual labor in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines, meters, hydrants, and other infrastructure facilities. Work is generally performed as part of a work team to maintain and repair underground utility systems. Employee will operate a variety of equipment installing water or sewer lines. Maintains daily work orders and reports. The employee will also install hydrants, meters, valves, repair clamps and related pipeline apparatus; as well as set meter boxes. Performs other work as assigned. Employee will need skill in the operation of lightweight and medium-weight construction equipment. Working knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of utility lines. Working knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual methods and tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of utility lines and appurtenances. Working knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools. Working knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment.

Work is defined as heavy work requiring physical exertion of in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is performed primarily in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold with snow and ice. Work may be in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manhole and other small places.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. One year or less experience in water distribution and/or wastewater collection system repair, maintenance and/or construction is required with some basic knowledge of equipment operations and safety. Must be certified at the NC water distribution system operator grade C level or NC wastewater collection system operator grade I level or ability to obtain within 18-months of employment. Must also possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) level A at the time of hiring or ability to obtain within one year of employment. Flagger certification preferred.

The position is a pay grade 8 with a starting salary of $28,922. Upon successful completion of a six month probationary period the salary will be moved to $30,368. Hiring salary will be determined based on qualifications and internal equity.
