Henderson Commissioners Request Changes to Balfour Parkway Plan

In a surprise vote in front of a capacity crowd, the Henderson County Commissioners recently passed a motion to ask the North Carolina DOT to “abandon the current Balfour Project as presented.”

In the 4 – 1 vote, the motion asked the DOT to “start over” and focus on realistic and reasonable ways to fight the area’s traffic problems.

The Stop the Balfour organization is extremely grateful to all of the county commissioners for listening to the public’s issues with the parkway and in particular to the four members who voted in favor of stopping all work on the Balfour Parkway. While it feels like it’s been a long fight, we really only started organizing 7 weeks ago. Many dedicated volunteers, residents and concerned citizens helped in this victory last night and they all should be congratulated on their willingness to step forward and help shape Henderson County. This is truly democracy in action in our wonderful corner of the mountains.

The county will continue to monitor the information from NCDOT to ensure they acquiesce to the wishes of the citizens of Henderson County and the County Commissioners. The Stop the Balfour team looks forward to working with the commissioners, NCDOT and planners while going back to the drawing board to create more realistic solutions to our current traffic issues.
