The Hendersonville Community Theatre’s 2017 season features five Main Stage productions and five Second Stage performances, all at their downtown 229 S Washington St. location.
The 2017 season has been called “A Season of Hope!” Whether the hope of understanding, the hope of love, or the hope for a better tomorrow, the season is filled with shows featuring hopeful themes.
“I think we’re presenting an interesting mix of shows,” said Jim Walker, HCT artistic director and co-managing director. “We’re trying to bring shows that people don’t have an opportunity to see — those that have good critical reviews but they’re not done often here.”
Larry Shue’s uproarious comedy kicks off the HCT Main Stage season February 17 – March 5, to be followed by the classic “Man of La Mancha” April 28 – May 14. An all children’s production of Disney’s musical “The Lion King, Jr” will be the summer production July 21 – August 6, and the fall season will feature Margaret Edison’s 1999 Pulitzer Prize winning Drama “Wit” September 15 – October 11. The Main Stage season will conclude with Sarah Ruhl’s delightful new comedy “The Stage Kiss” on November 3 – 19.
The HCT Second Stage series of 5 productions will begin with Michael Frayn’s play “Copenhagen” on March 17 – 26 and will include Marsha Norman’s Pulitzer Prize winning drama “Night Mother” on June 2 – 11, the original comedy “Significant Other” written and directed by local playwright Jeff Messer, and the musical revue “The Roaring Twenties” conceived by Linda Beaumont and Ed Gibson on August 25 – September 3. The Second Stage season will end with a return engagement of 2015’s holiday hit “The Santaland Diaries” by David Sedaris, featuring Bob Reece, on December 1 – 10.
