Donate a Turkey for the Holidays MANNA
Nov 12 all-day
MANNA FoodBank

Now through Nov. 15:
Help Make a Local Family’s Table a Bit Brighter and Donate a Turkey to our
TURKEY DRIVE!
This holiday season, we are hoping to fill families’ tables across our region with the staples that we all enjoy during a special holiday meal.
Food with Hope and Dignity
One reality of food banking is that food banks commonly receive holiday-specific food donations after a holiday has already occurred, making it difficult for food banks to provide these food items in a timely way to our neighbors seeking food assistance. We want families across our 16 counties to be able to celebrate the holiday with the rest of the community, and with that hope in mind, we are looking for the community to step up and help us eliminate one more worry for families about how they will fill their own holiday tables.
Donate a Turkey for the Holidays
When you are out shopping, we encourage you to pick up an extra frozen turkey to donate to MANNA! We know that hunger is a daily worry for tens of thousands of people across our region, and something as simple as a holiday turkey can truly give the gift of happiness and hope to people living through the daily experience of food insecurity.

November National Novel Writing Month
Nov 13 @ 10:00 am – 7:00 pm
Buncombe County Libraries

The Buncombe County Public Library system is supporting Asheville writers during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) by offering quiet writing spaces, raffle prizes, and a NaNoWriMo NoMo’ party in early December.

NaNoWriMo is a writing challenge to write 50,000 words of a novel during the thirty days of November. It began in 1999 and is supported by an international nonprofit organization of the same name.

The Black Mountain Library, Leicester Library, Pack Library, North Asheville Library, South Buncombe Library, and West Asheville Library will all be offering quiet spaces for writers to work on their 50,000 word count goal throughout the month. Some branches will offer tea, coffee and snacks as well. The Pack Library Youth Services department will host a Teen Writer’s Café every Friday afternoon. “We wanted to have a space at a library in the county every day where a writer could come plug in their laptop or pull out their notebook and chip away at their word count with no interruptions,” Anna Booraem, Branch Manager of the South Buncombe Library, says.

Each time a writer comes to one of the library writing spaces to work on their novel in November, they will be entered into a raffle for prizes to be given away at the NanoWrimo NoMo’ party. The raffle prizes will include treats from local businesses, including Dynamite Coffee, as well as some official NaNoWriMo swag.

The NaNoWriMo NoMo’ party will be held at the Lord Auditorium in the Pack Library on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 2-3:30 pm. The party is for any writer who participated in NaNoWriMo. There will be food, activities and opportunities to meet other writers, as well as a “micro mic” that will give each writer a chance to read one paragraph from their novel to the group.

unnatural history
Nov 13 @ 1:00 pm

unnatural history

The works in Unnatural History are portals backwards or forwards (or sometimes both at once) in geologic time, offering visions from before, after, and during the tenancy of humankind. Dioramas of cast resin depicting bizarre plants and animate slime suggest a post-human period wherein nature reclaims the planet. Artificial geodes made of oil paint, latex, foam, and soil transport viewers into a distant future where industrial waste has become fossil evidence of human activity. Abstract wall sculptures use motor and crude oil as raw material in the depiction of the vast, intricate industrial landscapes of the near future, while wooden mosaics made of materials salvaged from hurricane-affected cities and reconstructed glass objects found on beaches suggest a possible utopian remedy to decline, decay, and disintegration. Overall, the exhibition underscores and illustrates the many ways in which the technological processes of mass mining, manufacturing, resource extraction, and large-scale industrial agriculture have altered not only the present, but also the future history of our planet.

For more information, contact our Exhibitions Coordinator + Designer, Ashleigh Shuler, at 864.582.7616 x 254 or email [email protected].
