Join SAHC members and friends from the Highland Brewing Company and US Fish and Wildlife Service to celebrate the release of “Clawhammer”, Highland’s latest seasonal beer. Clawhammer Oktoberfest is a lightly colored, but toasty, rich and full bodied Marzen style lager, brewed with traditional German malt and the finest noble hops. A spicy hop finish and aroma balance out the abundance of malt flavor. Clawhammer means pure high-country enjoyment! This will be a long and strenuous 7-mile round-trip hike along various trails through Clawhammer Cove to the summit of Clawhammer Mountain at 4,072 feet in elevation. The cliff-top view at this highest point is pretty spectacular - the perfect reward for going the distance. We will follow the trails up a steep climb on a north-facing slope through a lush, rich cove forest and up to a high elevation red oak forest. The multi-use trails traverse mountain bike, equestrian, and hiking trails, forest service roads, and a gravel road. The whole hike is within the Clawhammer Mountain/Black Mountain Significant Natural Heritage Area that contains rocky outcrops, rare plants, and scenic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Pisgah National Forest. After the hike you have the option to cool off in a great swimming hole, which was recently featured in Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine. So bring your swimsuit if you’re interested. Please Bring: Sturdy hiking shoes, rain gear, water bottle, backpack lunch, sun-block and a camera. Please RSVP by September 3 to SAHC at cheryl@appalachian.org or 828-253-0095 x 209.
