Paws with a Purpose, local non-profit pet therapy organization, will host an evening of furry fun with the “Luck of the Paws”. The wine tasting and silent auction will take place from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 19, 2010 at the newly opened Appalachian Vintner wine store off Biltmore Avenue in Asheville, NC.Attendees will have the opportunity to sample several different wines, as well as bid on a wide array of fabulous items for both pets and people in the Silent Auction. The event is open to the public and tickets are $15 at the door. Ticket price includes wine and light hors d’oeuvres; beer will be available for purchase. All proceeds from ticket sales, donations, and the Silent Auction benefit Paws with a Purpose Pet Therapy programs. Paws with a Purpose is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization of dedicated volunteers and their pets who provide animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy services to individuals of all ages with physical, social, emotional and cognitive needs in healthcare facilities and educational programs. Help support these programs, and join Paws with a Purpose friends and volunteers at “Luck of the Paws!” Pet therapy's purpose is to improve the quality of life and emotional well being of those served. Illness, injury, hospitalization, or confinement in long term care facilities often result in stress, anxiety, and isolation that are reduced through the warmth and comfort of a therapy dog visit. Other benefits include the opportunity for sensory stimulation by touch and enhanced participation in occupational and physical therapy. Therapy dogs often serve as a means to open communication with withdrawn, isolated or unresponsive individuals. Therapy dogs are also an effective means to improve reading skills, develop compassion for animals, and build self-confidence and self esteem in school children and other at-risk adolescent populations.
