A new exhibit by Susan Lingg, an artist based in Cullowhee, North Carolina, is on display at The North Carolina Arboretum. Within and Around the Ancients depicts the unique mountain landscapes of the Southern Appalachians. Using watercolors, poured inks, and handmade paper, Lingg portrays the unique granite exposures of the mountains of the regions, as well as native flora. Described as realism through and artist's eye, her work captures and celebrates a passing moment. A registered artist with Handmade in America, Lingg has been exhibiting her work since 1982. She is a member of the Jackson County Visual Arts Council, the North Carolina Watercolor Society, and Dogwood Crafters. Lingg is also an instructor in watercolor and handmade paper. Susan is self taught, enjoying the process of painting in mixed media of watercolor, handmade papers, and acrylic. A full time artist, Susan has had a studio-gallery for over 20 years and enjoys a full schedule of teaching workshops and taking part in fundraiser demonstrations, as well as painting. Susan’s paintings reflect the beauty and magic of the Smoky Mountains that surround her home. Her paintings could be described as realism through an artists eye. The nature of her work, collaging with paper or mica from the earth, or mixing media allows for free expression and play, and experimentation. Susan is also teaching a few watercolor classes this spring in the adult education program. View the class description for “Exploring Watercolor” online. The North Carolina Arboretum is located on land within the Pisgah National Forest, and is operated under a special use permit issued by the National Forests in North Carolina. Established in 1986 by the General Assembly as an affiliate of the University of North Carolina, the Arboretum was founded nearly a century after Frederick Law Olmsted, the 'Father of American Landscape Architecture,' first envisioned such an institution near Asheville as part of his legacy to the Biltmore Estate.
