South Carolina Approves An "Education Lottery." North Carolinians May Help Fund S. C. Public Education.

South Carolina voters went to the polls and approved by a wide margin a constitutional amendment clearing the way for a state-run lottery. The vote was 741,043 votes for the amendment and 620,393 votes against it. Voters approved the amendment by a 54% to 46% margin. Profits from the lottery are earmarked for the S. C. State Education Fund.

The State of Georgia recently passed a state lottery, and South Carolinians were flocking to Georgia in large numbers to participate in the Georgia state lottery. South Carolina voters decided through the election that if South Carolinians are going to spend money on a state lottery that the money should stay at home and help fund their own public education system.

North Carolinians may now begin traveling to South Carolina to participate in their state lottery. North Carolina legislators who favor a state lottery say they are going to try and keep a tally on how many North Carolina dollars are being spent on the South Carolina lottery.

South Carolina Governor, Jim Hodges, had campaigned for the state lottery during his election against incumbent Republican Gov. David Beasley, and was successful in both his own election and in the vote for the lottery amendment. Hodges says, "My friends, the people have spoken tonight. They want an education lottery in South Carolina. Now let's move forward."

The South Carolina state legislature must now pass legislature that reflects the blue print of the state lottery as it was outlined in the amendment. The funds will also be used to provide scholarships to any South Carolina student with at least a "B" average who needs financial aid for college and plans to attend a state college.

Some South Carolina state legislators have vowed to oppose the lottery legislature irrespective of the results of this statewide election. Some South Carolina state legislators say they will only vote for the lottery if their respective districts voted in favor of the lottery.
