A new exhibit has been installed at Hands On! A Child's Gallery thanks to the Mineral and Lapidary Museum of Henderson County. Volunteers from the Museum installed geodes under the bridge on the Hands On! Mountain where children can see them up close and touch them. The geodes, from an extinct volcano in Chihuahua, Mexico, are lined with Quartz crystal, and some contain Calcite.
Landon Gailey, executive director of the Mineral and Lapidary Museum, says “We are excited to collaborate with the new museum. We feel that the more resources there are for kids in downtown Hendersonville, the better.” Mineral and Lapidary Museum volunteer Chris Heisey installed the geodes in the mountain., with the assistance of Gailey and Charles Summey. More geodes and a variety of minerals, gems, and fossils can be viewed at the Mineral and Lapidary Museum Monday through Friday, 1-5 and on Saturday, 10-5. The mission of Hands On! is to serve the needs of children and families in our community by providing educational exhibits that stimulate the imagination and motivate learning in a fun, safe, “Hands On!” environment. Located at 318 N. Main Street in downtown Hendersonville, Hands On! is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and other times to groups by reservation only.
