Folk Art Center Winter Programs Share Simplicity of Traditional Crafts

The Southern Highland Craft Guild, located in the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway just east of Asheville, is a membership guild of some of the finest craftspeople in the country. Some of these guild members generously share their knowledge of crafts and Appalachian culture with the public through a series of free educational events that take place year-round at the Folk Art Center. They cover not only the traditional methods of their craft but also any contemporary developments and methods that can be applied to their particular area of expertise.

The second Sunday of every month from January through December, the Western North Carolina Dulcimer Group invites the public to bring along a dulcimer and sit in with this group of music enthusiasts. The play list covers a wide range of musical styles and the atmosphere is casual. The group plays from 2:30-5 PM. Not only is this a wonderful opportunity for dulcimer players, but the gentle sounds they produce make for a lovely backdrop for any visitor to the Center on these Sunday afternoons.

The Carolina Mountain Woodturners demonstrate their techniques, sharing traditions and innovations in woodturning every third Saturday from January through December (except in September, when they will meet on September 4). This group of world-renowned woodworkers can be found working their craft from 10 AM – 4 PM, but call 828-298-7928 as hours may vary on occasion.

The Blue Ridge Spinners are on hand at the Folk Art Center every fourth Tuesday, January through December, to demonstrate the ancient craft of spinning. Hours are 1 – 3 PM. This group of fiber craftspeople hails from throughout Western North Carolina.

The Folk Art Center is located at Milepost 382 on the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, just east of Asheville. For more information, please call the Folk Art Center at 828-298-7928.
