Inaugural Carl Sandburg Writer-in-Residence Announced

Connie Backlund, Superintendent of Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site and Linda Holt, President of the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara are pleased to announce the inaugural Carl Sandburg Writer-in-Residence, Christina Lovin. Lovin is the author of What We Burned for Warmth and Little Fires. A two-time Pushcart nominee and multi-award winner, her writing has appeared in numerous publications. Southern Women Writers named Lovin 2007 Emerging Poet.

Having served as Writer-in-Residence at Devil’s Tower National Monument and the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in Central Oregon, she has been a resident fellow at Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, and Footpaths House (Azores). Lovin’s work has been generously supported with grants from Elizabeth George Foundation, Kentucky Foundation for Women, and Kentucky Arts Council, including the Al Smith Fellowship.

Lovin will live in the historic Farm Manager’s House on the grounds of Carl Sandburg Home NHS for three weeks during March 2010. She will spend her time using the tranquil and inspirational qualities of Connemara to work on her own original poems. She will also participate in community programs during her residency. It was the desire of Mrs. Lilian Sandburg, when her family's North Carolina home became a unit of the National Park Service, that Connemara continue to be a place of inspiration for future generations of writers.

With the support of the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara her idea will be implemented this year. This program will continue annually and offers poets an opportunity to live and work at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. Housing with a studio is provided near the Sandburg Home, along with a stipend. Applications for 2011 will be due in October 2010.

A welcoming reception in Ms. Lovin’s honor will be held on Friday, March 12 at the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce, at the corner of Kanuga and Church in Hendersonville, NC from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. She will share a few selections of her poetry beginning at 5:00 p.m. followed by a reception from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served and visitors will have an opportunity to visit with and learn more about her. Public welcome.

Ms. Lovin will then lead a poetry workshop for writers of all ages on March 27 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Carl Sandburg Home NHS, call 828-693-4178 for reservations.

Ms. Lovin will also appear at the Carl Sandburg Poetry Contest Celebration on March 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Historic Henderson County Courthouse Heritage Museum. Public welcome.
