“An Art That Nature Makes”

The Gallery at Flat Rock is excited to present a film screening of “An Art That Nature Makes” on Oct. 23 at Flat Rock Cinema.

This documentary film, directed by Molly Bernstein, details the processes behind celebrated photographer Rosamond Purcell’s work, which highlights the unexpected beauty in the discarded and decayed. The screenings are concurrent with an exhibition of Purcell’s photographs, which will be on display in the gallery from Oct. 18-29.

“An Art That Nature Makes” details Purcell’s fascination with the natural world—from a mastodon tooth to a hydrocephalic skull—offering insight into her unique way of recontextualizing objects both ordinary and strange into sometimes disturbing but always breathtaking imagery. Purcell’s photographs have appeared in National Geographic and over 20 published books. The Massachusetts-based artist has attracted admirers such as Jonathan Safran Foer, Errol Morris and Stephen Jay Gould.

Dr. James Costa, a friend and colleague of Purcell, will lead a discussion about the movie at the gallery following the Oct. 23 screening. Viewers may make the short walk up to the gallery from the cinema to participate. Costa is a professor of biology at Western Carolina University and the executive director of Highlands Biological Station.

Copies of books related to Purcell’s work—including “Owls Head,” “Illuminations: A Bestiary,” “Bookworm,” and “Dice: Deception, Fate & Rotten Luck”—will also be available for purchase in the gallery.

Tickets to see the film are $10 and are available for purchase in advance at the gallery or online at www.galleryflatrock.com. To learn more, please call the gallery at 828-698-7000.
