Trash Trout Bites Into Water Pollution in Hendersonville’s Mud Creek

To further expand upon the successful Trash Boom Project, GreenWorks is installing a larger device capable of capturing a greater volume of stormwater-generated litter.

The Mud Creek is the largest conveyor of waterborne trash to the French Broad River in Henderson County. After a heavy rain, the creek can explode in volume as it sheds over 200 square miles of urban and rural areas. To address the trash in higher flowing creeks, GreenWorks developed a device capable of withstanding greater volumes of water, while not impairing the local ecology.

The Trash Trout started off its life as a ’94 Sun Tracker Party Barge. Donated by Alan Sheppard, this model of pontoon boat’s frame, decking and pontoons are all made from aluminum, making the boat strong, lightweight and rust-resistant.

With the support of Biltmore Iron & Metal Company and Welding Unlimited, GreenWorks stripped the boat down to the aluminum frame and added in components that converted the old pontoon boat into a trash capturing device.

Follow the development of the Trash Trout and see videos of it in action on GreenWorks’ website.
