Hendersonville Church Awards $20,000 in Scholarships

The Grace Lutheran Church Foundation Board of Directors has approved the awarding of scholarships valued at $20,000 to eleven students for the 2016-2017 academic year.

The Foundation is supported by the generosity of donors within the congregation who specifically designate support for community college, four year institutions, medical school, and seminary studies. Since the scholarship program began about fifteen years ago, the Foundation has awarded 209 scholarships totaling $201,750.

Ron Brandon, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, said, “This year’s applicants were an accomplished group of students.” He went on to note that “the average high school grade point average for the students was 4.39, and there are three Eagle Scouts among the eleven awardees.”

The scholarship winners along with their college and major focus of studies are: Anthony Acosta-Oviedo, Blue Ridge Community College, Fine Arts; Jacob Freeman, NC State University, Political Science; Cameron Hahn, UNC Charlotte University, Mathematics for Business; Grant Hahn, NC State University, Turfgrass Science and Horticulture Science; Evan Langsdorf, Western Carolina University, Athletic Training; Nadine Langsdorf, UNC Charlotte University, Cellular Biology; Ronald Monroe, Appalachian State university, Biology; Alfredo Oviedo, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, Doctor of Ministry; Allison Pfotzer, Georgetown University, Regional and Comparative Studies; Olivia Slagle, UNC Chapel Hill, Journalism; and Sharon Zaragoza, Gardner Webb University, Nursing.
