Hendersonville Middle Competes in State Mock Trial Competition

Congratulations to Hendersonville Middle’s mock trial team, which was recently invited to attend the Justice Iredell Middle School Mock Trial state competition in Durham!

Students on the mock trial team began practicing in September, assigning parts, reviewing the case and creating their argument for the prosecution and defense sides. In November and early December, they took their “game” to the Henderson County Courthouse, where students practiced in the real setting with a real lawyer and/or judge who provided helpful feedback. The team’s first competition was at the Buncombe County Courthouse on Friday, December 9.

From there, the HMS team was invited to attend the Justice Iredell Middle School Mock Trial state competition in Durham, on January 9, 2016. The students competed against three of the 10 teams from across the state and won each of their trials. The HMS team also won five of the six possible awards.

In Round 1, Miriam S. won the “Most Effective Attorney” award, in Round 2: Sadie R. won “Most Effective Witness” and Sophie T. received “Most Effective Attorney,” and in Round 3 Lindsey R. won “Most Effective Witness” while Mireille S. earned the “Most Effective Attorney” award.

Hendersonville Middle teachers and mock trial coaches Frank Wilson, Jill Jackson and Scott Bond are very proud of the time, effort and work the students put toward this academic venue and are appreciative of the support from parents.
