Fall Salon Show at The Studios at Flat Rock

The Studios at Flat Rock is pleased to announce the Fall Salon Show featuring artists from Western North Carolina and beyond. The exhibition will run from October 9th through December 30th.

An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, October 9th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Ten artists will be featured in the show: Larry Calkins, Walt Cottingham, Alan Daigre, Mitch Dobrowner, Anna Johnson, Christine Kosiba, Janet Orselli, Kate Thayer, Kate Thompson, and David Voorhees. Each of these artists draw from the natural world around them and recognize the beauty of creation in all forms.

Featured in respected publications such as National Geographic, Time and Newsweek, Mitch Dobrowner, inspired by Ansel Adams and Minor White, captures the interaction of earth and sky in his black and white landscape and storm series.

Larry Calkins’ work reveals the basic truth in our lives; that the modern world is just a thin abstract veil that divides humanity from nature when the truth is, there is no divide. His work has been featured in galleries across the country and currently has a solo show at Gallery I|M|A in Seattle, WA.

Alan Daigre, a member of the respected Southern Highland Craft Guild, combines beauty, craftsmanship, and comfort to his wood block rope rocking chairs bringing elegance and sophistication to any home.

Christine Kosiba, a prominent sculptor in the southeast, works with stoneware clay, connecting us with animal forms in a unique way.

Walt Cottingham gives natural and recycled materials new life in his creative and functional birdhouses.

Kate Thompson uses acrylics, watercolors, and mixed media in her portrait series, Fractured Angels, which demonstrates humanities strive for peace and perfection in a flawed world.

Anna Johnson merges metal, stone, and animal in her unique jewelry recreating the circle of life in a single piece of craftsmanship.

Kate Thayer layers pastel over watercolors in her series of textured paintings that evoke memories of a simpler, more peaceful time.

David Voorhees’ technique of altered wheel-thrown stoneware and porcelain fired in a handmade wood/soda/salt kiln proves that there is just as much beauty in the process of creation as there is in the finished piece.

Janet Orselli’s installation art composed of found objects both manmade and natural, provokes self reflection of humanities place in nature and the impact we have on it.

The Studios at Flat Rock Fall Salon Show will be on exhibit through December 30th. Gallery hours are Wednesday – Saturday, 10-6pm and by appointment on Mondays and Tuesdays. Please contact Suzanne Camarata Ball for additional information at 828.698.7000 or [email protected].
