Kindergarten Registration Period Begins April 20th

Registration for children turning 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 will take place at all Henderson County Public Schools’ 13 elementary schools over three days next week.

Registration is Monday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Tuesday, April 21 from 8 am. to 4 p.m., and on Wednesday, April 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

When registering their children for kindergarten, parents must bring an official birth certificate and proof of residence, such as a utility bill with their name and physical address on it. Children’s immunization records and physical exam forms are desired at registration, but aren’t required until the first day of school.

Parents should register their child at their home district school, even if they are planning to ask for reassignment to another school later. To find out which of the elementary schools is their home district school, parents can call the HCPS Transportation Department at 697-4739. After registering at their home district school, parents can apply for reassignment – although reassignment applications are due to the school requested by the end of April.

Though elementary school offices will be accepting kindergarten registrations throughout the summer months, registering during the official Kindergarten Registration period ensures that parents will be invited to any meetings, kindergarten readiness events and open houses the schools may host over the summer.

Registering before the current school year ends also gives HCPS administrators more accurate numbers for the upcoming school year; since kindergarteners are brand new to the system, knowing the numbers for incoming classes as early as possible makes it easier to prepare staff and materials for the new year. Parents interested in practicing reading with their child before they enter school should check out an HCPS resource called “Reaching 4 Reading,” a video series featuring local teachers, students and parents. In both English and Spanish versions, the videos include segments about the foundation skills of reading and basic instructions on how to help your child with reading comprehension. To access the videos, click here.
