Vote For Hendersonville Elementary In Follett Challenge

Hendersonville Elementary needs your votes in the Follett Challenge to win up to $60,000 in educational materials from Follett School Solutions!

The school has entered a video, “Planting A Seed,” in the $200,000 national educational contest that recognizes innovation in teaching kindergarten through 12th grade.

The video details the school’s collaboration with the Hendersonville Tree Board in planting more than 50 trees along Bearcat Loop Parkway last October, to both beautify the elementary school’s entrance and serve as the focal point for student lessons incorporating science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM).

“The students all helped plant the trees,” said Candice Greedy, school library media coordinator. “And they did research projects on their class trees.”

In the video, kindergarten teacher Tori Shaffer explains how her class will use science and math skills to measure the growth of their tree – the Silverbell – and record data throughout the year. Older students will use the Internet to research their trees, and Shaffer and several other teachers will have their students draw their trees, integrating art into the project.

Henderson Elementary stands to win the $60,000 grand prize, a $30,000 semifinalist prize or an $8,000 “People’s Choice” award for the school-wide integrative project.

The “People’s Choice” prizes will solely be based on how many votes applicants have received for their videos from the public. Video voting begins today, Jan. 19. Judges will be seeking applications that illustrate critical thinking, communication, creativity and collaboration between students and among teachers and school staff, according to a news release.

After registering, users can cast one vote per day through Jan. 30, when voting ends. The public’s votes will also play a role in the overall rubric as 20 percent of each school’s final score is based on the number of votes generated for their video. Check out the video and vote here!
