Sloan Neuburger, The 2014-15 Henderson County Public Schools Teacher of the Year

Sloan Neuburger, an Exceptional Children’s Teacher at North Henderson High School, is the 2014-15 Henderson County Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

Ms. Neuburger began her educational career as a teaching assistant in a special education class at Hendersonville High School in 2000, where she worked until 2002. In 2002 she became an Occupational Course of Study teacher at North Henderson High teaching students in grades 9-12. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University, a Certification in Special Education from Mars Hill University, and a Masters in Executive Leadership from Gardner Webb.

Ms. Neuburger said this about teaching, “I know that every student that walks through my door can learn. I tell them that on the first day, and I won’t accept anything else. My expectations are higher than most think they should be, but I don’t settle for less. I work as hard for them as I expect them to work, and together we accomplish more. I believe in teamwork. The key to me being effective in the classroom as a teacher is figuring out two things: what kind of learner each of my students is and who they are as people. I can’t reach them if I don’t know them.”

The 2014-15 Teachers of the Year were honored at a luncheon held at the Hendersonville Country Club on May 30. Emily Pruitt, Student Body President of North Henderson High School, was the keynote speaker. Each school Teacher of the Year was recognized and the selection of Ms. Neuburger as the 2014-15 Henderson County Public Schools Teacher of the Year was announced. Park Ridge Health is the sponsor for the Teacher of the Year program. Graham Fields, Assistant to the President for External Relations of Park Ridge Health, presented each Teacher of the Year with a certificate for a spa treatment and presented Ms. Neuburger with a $1,000 check from Park Ridge Health to be used for her professional advancement.APNorth6685

Every year the staff at each of the Henderson County Public Schools 23 schools select a Teacher of the Year. The teacher must have three years teaching experience to be nominated. A committee comprised of a principal, assistant principal, parent, School Board member, and the current HCPS Teacher of the Year interview the 23 candidates to select one teacher to become the Teacher of the Year for the Henderson County Public Schools.
