Book-to-Movie Club Set to Show 100th Selection

The Henderson County Public Library is celebrating its centennial this year and has another centenary event to celebrate.

On Tuesday, April 8th from 4-6 p.m. the Book-to-Movie Club will show its 100th movie selection, Saving Mr. Banks, followed by a discussion of P.L.Travers’ “Mary Poppins” on Tuesday, April 22nd. The film tells the story of Walt Disney’s making of Mary Poppins, which is based on Travers’ children’s book.

Librarian Brenda Hind started the Book-to-Movie Club in 2006 with the selection of To Kill a Mockingbird. Since that time, the club meetings have continued uninterrupted, thanks largely to a dedicated core of readers and Library Technician, Jennifer Brevard, who has led the club for 5 years.

“When we started we worried that we would run out of movies in 3 or 4 years” said Barbara Saurborn, one of the founding members, “Fortunately, that hasn’t happened.”

Although many public libraries host book clubs, Henderson County’s Book-to-Movie Club is an unusual concept designed to introduce moviegoers to the books on which many well-known movies are based. Over the years the club has done a great range of movies, from oldies such as Maltese Falcon to current favorites such as The Help.

The Book-to-Movie Club shows the film on the second Tuesday of each month with discussion of the book and the movie on the fourth Tuesday of every month. The club meets at the Henderson County Public Library at the Kaplan Auditorium. For additional information please contact Jean McGrady at [email protected] or by phone at 687-4725 (Ext. 4)
